Surgical trainees need to very rapidly gain a good understanding of the nature of the diseases they are treating and to build their own repertoire of surgical operations. They must also pass the very searching examinations, and there is consequently great pressure, within a limited time period, to obtain not only experience and training but also a considerable amount of factual and practical knowledge. Principles of Surgical Practice builds on the success of Fundamentals of Surgical Practice, and has been designed to meet the needs of Basic Surgical Trainees approaching the viva part of the Final Assessment, which tests their knowledge of operative surgery, intensive care and pathology. The editors have drawn upon the experience a team of recognised experts and experienced surgical trainers to provide their perspective on the various aspects of surgical management in chapters, presented in a way that makes learning as efficient as possible but containing sufficient detail to cover all aspects of the viva examination. Principles of Surgical Practice is indispensable to the Basic Surgical Trainee, and will also provide the established surgeon and other healthcare professionals working in the surgical environment with an overview of the key principles underpinning modern surgical practice.

Surgical trainees are swamped with reading material. Anyone who doubts this need, only review the recommended reading list for the FRACS Part I exam. All of the prescribed texts cover a broad area of basic sciences, although they are somewhat lacking in operative surgical techniques. The RACS module programme for the basic surgical trainee has made some attempt to fill this gap. Principles of Surgical Practice was designed to meet the needs of UK surgical trainees preparing for the viva voce examination. It is well written, easy to read, with good quality glossy pages and a hard cover. The book is divided into three main sections: operative surgery: critical care and applied physiology; and applied pathology. The second and third sections encompass many topics that are covered in other recommended texts, although they are a very good concise summary. The detail is by no means to the extent required for the RACS Part I examination, but they are brief and well written with a more practical rather than theoretical approach. Sections 2 and 3 are good quick reference for practical ward-based problems. Where this book really stands out, however, is in section 1, operative surgery. More than 150 pages have been devoted to providing the trainee surgeon with enough practical and theoretical knowledge to be able to understand the operative steps in common surgical techniques. It does this well from minor surgical procedures such as sebaceous cysts and hernias through to major operations such as thyroidectomies and bowel procedures. Operative steps are fully described within the text and are depicted well in excellent line drawings. The laparoscopic section discusses the uses and risks of laparoscopic instruments well. There is an excellent section on plastic surgery wherein many basic plastic surgical principles and a large variety of grafts and flaps are explained in good detail. For each procedure there is also a discussion on preoperative and postoperative m.
Principles of Surgical Practice has been designed to meet the needs of Basic Surgical Trainees approaching the viva part of the Final Assessment, which tests their knowledge of operative surgery, intensive care and pathology.
