Synopsis
No other creature, apart from man, alters its environment as much as the beaver. The North American beaver, once hunted almost to extinction, has been successfully reintroduced to nearly all its original range, and again numbers in the millions. The Eurasian beaver, whose numbers were also seriously depleted, is now recovering following protection and natural recolonisation, but remains vulnerable in some areas. In this engaging study, which focuses on the North American beaver, the author introduces us to the beaver's way of life through the seasons. He describes how they build dams, lodges, burrows, channels and canals, how they raise their young, and the relationship between humans and these industrious animals.
