Synopsis

The Breakdown is a novel set in the heart of British Guiana in the 1950s and Wales in the early 1970s. It is a tale of unconditional love, colonial racism, deceit, intrigue, revenge and murder. The politics of British Guiana plays an integral part in framing the hero’s views of justice and decency and acts as a backdrop and metaphor for the illicit acts of colonialism. George Winwick, a handsome English regimental sergeant major, embarks on a career in plantation management in British Guiana after World War 2. However, he becomes disillusioned with the negative impact that his company has on the indigenous workforce and sets out to redress the situation. He falls in love and marries an Indo-Guianese girl and they have a baby. Political upheaval and racialist overtones towards George and his young family force him to return to England. George’s life takes a turn for the worse and his family fall on hard times. His son, Steven, eventually gains a place at university, meets a girl and falls in love. However, a dark secret is revealed which contributes to the collapse of their relationship and results in a cataclysmic finale which impacts horrendously on both set of families.
