Synopsis

What if the boundary between truth and falsehood was an illusion?

Sophist is one of Plato's most intricate and philosophically rich dialogues-a profound attempt to define what it means to be, and more challengingly, what it means not to be. Framed as a conversation between the Eleatic Stranger and Theaetetus, the dialogue ventures beyond simple definitions to dissect the fabric of language, deception, logic, and ontology.

This work serves as a pivotal moment in Plato's philosophical development. Unlike earlier dialogues, which center on Socratic questioning, Sophist introduces a rigorous method of division and dialectic aimed at dissecting abstract concepts. This modern translation brings Plato's philosophical investigation into the 21st century, without sacrificing the original's complexity or rhetorical elegance.

What You'll Discover in This Modern Translation:

• A Revolutionary Exploration of Non-Being - Discover how Plato grapples with the idea that falsehood can "exist" at all.
• A Critical Dissection of Sophistry and Rhetoric - Learn how deceptive argumentation is crafted and how it misleads.
• The Method of Division - Understand Plato's formal technique for breaking down and categorizing ideas with precision.
• A Philosophical Shift - See the transition from Socratic dialogues to systematic metaphysical inquiry led by new voices.
• A Clear and Faithful Modern Translation - Designed for accessibility without losing the complexity of Plato's logic and themes.

If you've ever questioned what it means to "be," Sophist is a masterwork that invites you to step beyond appearances-and uncover truth in its most elusive form.
