Synopsis
Virgil's masterpiece, one of the greatest works in Western literature, was written in Latin, between 29 and 19 BCE, recalling events after the Fall of Troy over 1200 years before, as told in the famous Homeric epics of Greek literature the Iliad and the Odyssey. The great adventures of Aeneas' flight from Troy and the prophesy of his founding of a great city linked Roman dynasty to the legends of a heroic past, bringing myth and history to bear in the politics of the Roman Empire. Here in the much-loved translation by John Dryden, and accompanied by Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics, with biographical material on Virgil's life and works.

About the Authors
Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro) (70–19 BC), was the great Roman poet of classical antiquity. He wrote three of the most famous poems in Classical literature: the Eclogues (or Bucolics), the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. He also appears in Dante's Divine Comedy as a guide to the author through Inferno and Purgatorio.

David Hopkins is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol. His recent publications include (as author) Conversing with Antiquity: English Poets and the Classics from Shakespeare to Pope and (as co-General Editor) the five-volume Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature.
