I hope you enjoy reading about some of our missionary experiences and the lessons we learned as we were privileged to partner with God as he actively worked all around, among, and within us.Our formal missionary life—and our missionary education—began with fourteen months of language learning in San Jose, Costa Rica and continued unabated during the years we served as missionaries in Colombia, South America. The first week in our assigned Colombian city was marked by student riots that almost trapped me downtown. Driving the lonely foggy mountains brought more excitement than I needed and taught valuable lessons. Learning about cultural distinctives (like "chicken-head soup") sometimes proved embarrassing but helped us understand the people better.One of my favorite ministries was ministering at a remote mountain coffee farm with a local pastor. A most memorable experience was serving on a missionary team in Colombia’s wild remote Eastern Plains, a flat, sea-level grassland stretching hundreds of miles. Easily the most moving experience was the unspeakable tragedy when the snow-capped Mt. Ruiz exploded, burying the entire town of Armero and taking the lives of an estimated 23,000 people.Among the many Colombians who impacted us were a homeless teen I call “my friend the non-person,” an amazing Christian servant to whom I affectionately refer as "the Mother Teresa of Manizales,” a ten-year-old boy who worked full time (sadly similar to many youth in those days), a small working-class church who built a home for a needy elderly couple, a young lady who spent years in a convent before finding Christ, and a teenage girl who almost single-handedly ignited a Christian discipleship movement in a large Colombian city. You won’t want to miss reading true tales about the Magical Spring, the Search for Don Ramon, Mom is Missing, and the Day I ate a Hockey Puck. Through it all, God used faithful Christ-followers to bless lives, fill needs, and share the love of Christ with others around them.
