He is also beginning to realize he has an unexpected sensitivity—something he doesn’t really want—or want to talk about. Max volunteers to help his grandfather deliver a mythical talisman to a monastery in one of Bhutan’s high Himalayan passes. This seems a safe outdoor adventure--if you don’t know about the powerful people that would do anything to possess the talisman.

Max meets Hillary, a red-headed Scottish girl, in Bhutan’s capital. Their meeting doesn’t go well. Unhappily, they end up on the same trek. Worse, Max needs her help because of poachers, mountain tigers, Chinese Special Forces seeking the talisman, and a cranky Tibetan dakini who believes the talisman is hers. Max and Hillary need each other to survive. Will they be able to work together?
