The Gravity of Typography: Exploring Type Across Various Design Mediums is a visual guide that provides students with an understanding of key principles of typography, as well as its importance and impact in design work. The book demonstrates that regardless of medium, typography is a critical component that has the power to make or break a design.
Drawing on her vast experience as a graphic designer, Karyn Jimenez-Elliott has created an innovative and visually demonstrative guide that effectively introduces readers to how typography can enhance designs across a variety of mediums, including branding, print design, packaging and product design, editorial and publication, design for web, event design and environmental graphics, designing for social impact, and personal branding and portfolio work. The book highlights a diverse range of work and real-world examples from Jimenez-Elliott's colleagues, friends, former classmates, and students, as well as examples of her own work. Designer's project notes, written in their own words, accompany each example and help readers understand the thought process behind developing logos, selecting fonts, considering print and digital delivery of design work, creating a portfolio that reflects their personal brand, and more.
Approachable, immersive, and grounded in visual impact, The Gravity of Typography is an essential textbook for courses and programs in graphic design.
