By engaging with education, contemporary art and global sustainability goals, this book connects the artistic way of communication with ecological obligations and social issues and promotes a sense of active citizenship. The main aim of is to show how shared spaces for exchange in the fields of art education and continuous professional development can reflect, inspire and integrate sustainability principles that are becoming crucial in today’s world. Its three parts combine expertise in visual arts education, education for sustainable development, contemporary art practice and sustainability activism. Finally, Part III presents brief case studies illustrating international projects by contemporary artists, curators, environmentalists and others, providing educators with several inspirational models of concrete and creative action.

Raphael Vella is a professor of art education at the Faculty of Education, University of Malta, where he coordinates postgraduate degrees in art education and social practice arts and critical education. He has published extensively on issues relating to contemporary art, identity in art education, sustainability and the arts and socially engaged arts practices. He is also a practising artist and curator of contemporary art.

Dr Victoria Pavlou is a professor of art education at Frederick University, Cyprus. Her research focuses on initial and continuing teacher professional development through blended and distance learning and pupils’ learning preferences. Her professional passions include changing attitudes, building confidence and resilience through art, connecting art with real-life issues, and exploring synergies with education for sustainable development. She coordinated the European-funded projects ‘Critical ARts Education for Sustainable Societies’ (2022–24) and ‘Visual Art Education in New Times: Connecting Art with Real-Life Issues’ (2019–22).
