What you see is very different from what you think you see...
There's a lot going on behind the scenes when you like a photograph. Maybe something is tricking your brain into believing a static image is alive with motion. But how? Or maybe you're being drawn in by a rich, high-contrast subject. But what's so great about really black blacks and really white whites? And if the composition is subverting your expectations, where did those expectations come from in the first place?
To answer these questions, international award-winning cinematographer Brian Dilg blends photographic fundamentals like exposure, focus, and composition with the latest developments in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and evolutionary biology, in a thrilling exploration of how a photo works, how your brain perceives it, and why you like the result.

Brian Dilg is a photographer, filmmaker, writer, and educator. Founding chair of the Photography department of New York Film Academy, he has also served as a spokesperson for Canon, for whom he created a series of photography tutorials.
He has been involved in photography since childhood, growing up in the darkroom under the tutelage of his father and grandfather, both avid amateur photographers. His work has since been exhibited and collected worldwide, and published in the New York Times, Time Out, the Village Voice, and on book covers for Simon and Schuster, Hyperion, Doubleday, and others.
Combining science and photography, Brian Dilg explores the reasons behind Why You Like This Photo. Beauty is not just in the eye of the beholder. It's something that can be measured and understood. Science Fact. Scientists are starting to unravel more and more about how the mind has developed over human history, revealing some surprising truths about how the mind works. Did you know, for example, that the landscape photos people think of as most beautiful are closely correlated with exactly the kind of lush fertile landscape early humans sought out?
This kind of information is fascinating for its own sake, but if you're photographer it's even more useful. Featuring interviews with numerous great photographers combined with concepts from exciting areas of science and psychology, Why You Like This Photo holds the inspiring and practical keys to capturing the images that you, and everyone, will love.
