Synopsis
The British shortage of munitions during the First World War was a case of gross mismanagement with disastrous consequences; it significantly heightened casualties on the battlefield by preventing a breakthrough that could have ended the impasse on the Western Front. So significant was the cost of the shell scandal that when it was disclosed to the public, the incumbent Liberal Government was brought to its knees and the nation was galvanised into accepting a commitment to total war for the first time in British history. The British Shell Shortage of the First World War examines shell manufacture in the turbulent context of the political and military battles of 1915. It looks particularly at the battles of Neuve Chapelle and Aubers Ridge from the perspective of The Rifle Brigade, whose casualties led to Charles à Court Repington s momentous article in The Times, which resulted in the formation of both the Coalition Government and the Ministry of Munitions under the pragmatic leadership of David Lloyd George. About the Author
PHILLIP HARDING was born in 1959 and is the youngest son of a rifleman who fought in the Second World War. He researched into his family s history and collected information on his father s war career and service years, and encouraged by Sir Christopher Wallace of the Green Jackets Museum, Harding compiled his first book From Gazala to Tunis: 422 Days in the Life of the 2nd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade (Fonthill Media) to give recognition to the brave men and officers of the 2nd Battalion.
