Synopsis

This new edition profiles over sixty of the world's most incredible engineered structures, built in the last 100 years. "Great Modern Structures" is an awe-inspiring selection of man-made wonders of the modern age. Many of those featured are record breakers within the respective categories - Height, Span, Volume, Surface and Power. Alongside the architectural magnificence of towers, such as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, or river crossings such as Millau Viaduct Bridge, France, David Littlefield and Will Jones also discuss less obvious, non-architectural structures that have tested the stamina and resourcefulness of designers and builders, such as the Troll A Gas Platform in the North sea. Each of the entries explores the strengths and qualities of the featured structure, along with the individual challenges faced in its construction shedding light on the skill of the architects and builders involved. Featuring the work of many architects and engineers, "Great Modern Structures" is an authoritative but accessible guide to the feats of engineering that have come to represent the modern world.
