DUNDEE has undergone momentous change in the six decades since World War Two. Few bombs fell on the city during the war, but life on the home front was not easy. In 1945 Dundee Corporation not only faced an acute housing crisis, but it also had to fight to attract new employers. In the next few decades, the city's economy diversified after its long dependence on the jute industry, and cultural and social life developed in directions that would have been hard to predict two generations ago. Andrew Murray Scott's vivid, informative and finely illustrated account concentrates on these critical years in Dundee's history. He offers keen insights into the processes of development and recovery, and paints a graphic portrait of the modern city and its people. His book considers the memorable events and leading characters in these 60 turbulent years, from the decline of jute and the Robb Caledon sit-in to the sporting triumphs of Liz McColgan, Dick McTaggart and the city's two football teams. His narrative is packed with accounts of crimes and notable events, including the Timex dispute and the Octocentenary celebrations. He looks at the changing faces of the Overgate, the schools and housing estates, and recalls famous visitors – Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, the Beatles and royalty. The good times are recorded – dancing days at the JM, the Palais, the Barracuda. But times of strife and scandal are featured too. All the failures and the successes that made today's Dundee the 'City of Discovery', a vibrant campus city of the arts, bio-medical sciences and high-tech industries, are part of the story.
