Beyond textbook theory and the research literature there is always a gap to bridge when applying this information with 'live' athletes. In this book we delve into that uncharted territory that lies between. As implied in the title, there is an art to this translation of science into practice, and a great deal of wisdom and nuance involved in the process. We explore what differentiates truly elite practice, citing relevant examples and drawing upon applied experience. This is a book for coaches, leaders, practitioners across disciplines, and athletes who wish to be informed. Key themes include 'higher order skills' to navigate the challenge of truly becoming informed in the 'Information Age', creating a genuinely elite environment, effective coaching and the human interaction element of working with athletes, and the role of the athlete themselves in the process. The text is broken into three parts. The first section is for practitioners. The second, for coaches and leaders. The final part is dedicated to the role of the athlete.

Paul Gamble has worked with elite athletes of all ages from an array of sports during a career working in elite and professional sport that has spanned two decades. Informed: The Art of the Science of Preparing Athletes is Paul’s fifth book, and is a departure from the four textbooks he has previously written, beginning with ‘Strength & Conditioning for Team Sports’, which was first published in 2009. Paul completed his PhD in 2005 comprising applied research with elite level rugby union football players alongside his role as strength and conditioning coach with an English Premiership club. Since that time Paul has remained engaged with the academic realm, alongside his day-to-day work with athletes and coaches, and retains an ongoing involvement in applied research. Originally from the UK, Paul is much-travelled and following six years in New Zealand most recently relocated to Vancouver, Canada. In addition to his work in the physical preparation, sports injury and athletic development realms, Paul is also an elite track and field coach, and attended the IAAF World Championships in 2017 as a coach with the New Zealand team.
