What can you say when a man tells you he is fine, but you are worried about him?
In The Men Who Say They Are Fine, Peter Griffiths explores the distress that can remain hidden behind work, humour, reliability and apparent confidence. Drawing on personal experience and Australian research, he examines shame, loneliness, trauma, alcohol, grief and the pressure to keep functioning when life feels overwhelming.
The book also considers what happens after a man asks for help: the barriers to care, the importance of being listened to and the need for support that continues beyond a crisis.
Practical example conversations help readers think about asking directly about suicide, responding to a disclosure and recognising when urgent assistance is needed. Guidance for concerned supporters sits alongside personal reflections, Australian support information and a final reader check.
Written for men who are struggling and the people who care about them, this is an invitation to make difficult conversations more possible. The statistics and services are Australian; many of the experiences and approaches discussed are relevant internationally.
Contains discussion of suicide, self-harm, trauma, violence, alcohol dependence and bereavement. It does not replace individual mental health care.

Peter Griffiths is an Australian author, community advocate and public servant based in Bathurst, New South Wales. His writing explores the distance between who we really are and who we are expected to be-the identities we inherit, the roles we assume and the labels others place upon us.Drawing on lived experience and a background in mental health and public service, Peter writes about love, grief, dignity, belonging and the systems that shape people's lives. He is particularly interested in what happens when a role becomes our whole identity, when assumptions replace understanding, and when we begin to discover ourselves beyond other people's expectations. His late wife, Mandy, remains a lasting influence on his writing and his appreciation for genuine connection. Across his books, Peter encourages readers to look beyond the label and recognise the person.

Buch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Men Who Say They Are Fine is an honest, compassionate examination of men's suicide, mental health and the pressures that make admitting distress difficult.Drawing on Australian research and personal experiences of addiction, trauma, mental illness, grief and suicidal distress, Peter explores what may be happening inside men who keep working, laughing and saying they are fine. He considers the differences between passing suicidal thoughts, intense distress and taking action to end a life, recognising that everyone's experience is different. The book examines body image, employment, housing, financial expectations, alcohol, relationships, loneliness and ageing, alongside the belief that a man's worth depends on his achievements. Reflecting on criticism of his retail work and being told he had achieved nothing, Peter challenges the judgements people internalise and recognises that simply remaining here can represent extraordinary strength. He also explores masculinity and the debate surrounding toxic masculinity, asking whether harmful behaviour is better understood through personality, learned behaviour, social expectations and individual choices. Men and women can experience controlling, aggressive or emotionally destructive behaviour; addressing it requires accountability without stereotyping an entire sex.At its heart, this book asks what happens when a man finally speaks: what makes honesty possible, what closes conversations down and what meaningful support looks like. Listening means remaining present without judgement, not finding perfect words or immediately solving everything.Written for men searching for words and those supporting them, The Men Who Say They Are Fine offers no universal solution. It offers honesty, reflection and a reminder that struggling is not weakness, achievement has no single measure, and asking for help should be the beginning of support-not the end of the conversation.
