Synopsis

About the Authors

Bruce was Professor of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology at Univ. of CA, San Francisco (UCSF), where he was an NIH-funded investigator for two decades and helped launch the UCSF liver transplant program. He is author of over 200 research and review articles and multiple issued/pending patents. He served as Editor of Sleisenger & Fordtran's Textbook of Gastroenterology, Assoc. Editor of Gastroenterology, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and President of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology and has served as a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Liver Foundation, as a member of the President's Council Executive Committee for UCSF's J. David Gladstone Institute and on the External Advisory Board for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine's (NUFSM) Clinical and Translational Science Program. He is Past President of NUFSM's Medical Association Alumni Board, was named NUFSM's 2010 Distinguished Alumnus and was a 2018 recipient of the prestigious Service to Northwestern Award. Bruce has held VP positions at Novartis and Chiron, where he was involved in the development of multiple vaccines and therapeutics now approved in the US and/or Europe. He was most recently Sr. Vice President and Chief Medical & Development Officer at Hyperion Therapeutics, where he oversaw the development of glycerol phenylbutyrate GPB, (RAVICTI(R)), approved for treatment of urea cycle disorders in the US, Europe and Canada and the successful phase 2 trial of GPB for hepatic encephalopathy. He was inventor/co-inventor on Hyperion's intellectual property, a member of Hyperion's road show team leading to its 2012 IPO, 2013 secondary offering and May 2015 sale to Horizon Pharma. Bruce is currently Independent Director, co-founder and/or consultant to several biotechnology companies. Bruce has raised over $100,000 for multiple foundations, including the Am Liver Foundation (2005 & 2006 Boston Marathons; 2008 Mt. Shasta Climb), the Karen Dept of Health and Welfare - a Burmese welfare organization (with his son, organized a 2009 fund raiser bike ride from central Thailand to the Burma border) and the National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation (launched and participated in Cure-the-Cycle bike rides from 2010 to 2017).
