In 1900 the New York Evening Journal published an article by a reporter who used a pretext to get into Bellevue Mental Hospital. He claimed that he had seen three male nurses garrote to death an inmate because he would not obey an order to go to the dining room. The public was outraged, and the head nurse was indicted for manslaughter. His career and life depended on whether the story was true or a monstrous lie, and that lay in the hands of his attorney, Michael Miles.
