Synopsis
The story of the American style comic opera from its origins in the 1880's to its decline just prior to the Great Depression in the 1930's. The book also contains the prompt books to three forgotten "Chicago-style" comic operas: the Burgomaster, the Royal Chef and the Sho-Gun. The Burgomaster was the first produced and set the standard for the next decade. The Sho-Gun was the second comic opera by George Ade and some critics felt it was his best.
