Charlie was born and raised in, 'rugby mad' South Africa and fell in love with the game when he began attending boarding school at a young age. Post schooling he has been fortunate to travel and partly make a career in rugby as a player, most recently in Southern California, USA. Charlie is passionate about the sport and considers himself a student of the game. He is currently the director and head coach of a high performance rugby academy in San Diego, California, focusing on fundamental skill development. He also plays his own rugby for Old Mission Beach Athletic Club in the Pacific Rugby Premiership.
