Synopsis

Adam Roper's second volume of poetry explores a diverse artistic landscape, emerging from growing up on Vancouver Island to coming of age in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. It is a landscape occupied with birds and trees, spirituality, loss and recovery, as well as forays into ecology and wildlife. The sensibility is contemplative and childlike, the form is flowing with concise phrases alluding to entire ecosystems of observations of the natural world.Adam's poetry expresses a deep appreciation for reflections of the natural world present in the works of Annie Dillard and Luci Shaw, the divine simplicity of Mary Oliver, and the wry humour of Shel Silverstein. The poems are in one sense lyrical and in another conversational recognition of daily life in Vancouver's Strathcona, Chinatown, and Grandview-Woodlands Neighborhoods. After he publishes this book Adam is going to retire south to the United States of America for an extended vacation. Not all the states mind you, probably only about 7 or 8 of the states. Like “Travels with Charlie” (except instead of a dog named Charlie, Adam will be traveling with his prosthetic leg painted to look like Wilson from Castaway, and instead of being a timeless author of classic novels Adam is a humble poet you’ve never heard of). As much as Adam appreciates you carting this book around the house and leaving it in the bathroom for all your guests to read, I wouldn't recommend using this book as either toilet paper or kindling (especially if you bought the kindle edition). This book would make a great gift for a 1 year anniversary or a "our first Christmas as a couple" gift, but not very good for a 3rd date gift, speaking from experience. Again, sorry Tim, you really seemed like the poetry type!
