What is light made of, waves or particles or kind of both? Descartes (1637) and Newton (1704) developed the particle theory of light. Young’s double-slit experiment revived the wave theory of light, which was first proposed by Huygens (1678). In 1900, Planck suggested that light behaved like quanta. In 1905, Einstein showed that the photoelectric effect could be explained by using the concept of photons. In 1928, Bohr postulated complementarity. The wave-particle duality is the “one real mystery of quantum mechanics” (Richard Feynman). The popular “Shut up and calculate” led to developments in quantum theory. We suggest to add a word: “experiment” and, becomes: “Shut up, experiment and calculate”. By “experiment” we mean NEW experiments. Thus the focus of this book is on designing varieties of modern apparatuses and experiments, such as 2-dimension-Cross-Double-Slit apparatus and Extended-Mach-Zehnder-Interferometer,to systematically explore the nature of wave-particle duality of both photons and particles experimentally. Furthermore, we raise a question: whether wave-particle duality is an intrinsic nature of particles? The word “intrinsic” means “should be independent on state of motion of particle/apparatus/observer”, namely “should not depend on whether particle/apparatus/observer are uniformly moving or accelerating”. Then next question is how to test? For this aim, we design numerous experiments to study the nature of accelerating particles, and explore mechanism of wave function collapse. The nature of accelerating particles leads to Extended-uncertainty principle. The designed new apparatuses and experiments indicate that the particle nature of matter is intrinsic, and their wave nature is secondary and under certain condition. This conclusion might be applied to photons, and testing experiments are designed in this book. The designed experiments are worth to pursue further.
