• Chapter 1 describes the history of manual training in U.S. that forms today’s workforce education and development, leading to the current education system in the U.S. • Chapter 2 expands on Chapter 1 and further discusses the im-portance of having education that leads to career advancement and as the pathway to social and economic stability in the 21st century workforce. Some of the information in this chapter al-so appeared in The Historical Critique of Career and Technical Edu-cation in California from 1900-2000 and Status of California Commu-nity Colleges in the 21st Century book published by the author (O’Lawrence, 2013). • Chapter 3 provides an historical review of career and technical education around the globe and present discussion within the context of the role of career and technical education (Work-force) in the U.S. Most of this chapter was previously published in the International Journal of Vocational Education and Training (O’Lawrence, 2008b). • Chapter 4 discusses the effect of globalization in the 21st cen-tury, the aspects of work, and world trade. Part of the chapter is research previously completed and published as part of Chapter 8 in The Historical Critique of Career and Technical Educa-tion in California from 1900-2000 and Status of California Community Colleges in the 21st Century (O’Lawrence, 2013, pp. 209-226). • Chapter 5 provides important information on how workforce education could change workplace competitiveness in the glob-al economy and discusses some of the federal vocational and technical education acts in the U.S. • Chapter 6 focuses on U.S. and global economy and the im-portant of meaningful education that students need for gainful employment. The information in this chapter has been updated as part of the study previously published as Chapter 7 in O’Lawrence (2013). • Chapter 7 provides recent information from the U.S. depart-ment of labor statistic regarding the status of the economy as a continuation to Chapter 6 and has been updated with the latest data. • Chapter 8 describes Distant Learning education, its importance and its disadvantages and advantages. The information in this chapter has been updated as part of the study previously pub-lished as a research article in Techniques (O’Lawrence, 2006). • Chapter 9 expands on the mission of workforce education and development and provides statistical reports from the Bureau of Labor Statistics about the U.S. economy. Part of this chapter has also been previously published as a research article in Workforce Education Forum (O’Lawrence & Sanchez, 2003). • Chapter 10 covers the complex issues of the factors that drive demand for an education workforce in America. • Chapter 11summarizes the effect of poverty on global econo-my, the changing world economy, and highlights several of the key issues of globalization.
