Synopsis

Eighty panel paintings from Philip James Studio take locations of Manhattan to develop an abstract interpretation of New York. Vivid colour chords of lilac, red, lemon and black, are orchestrated in a dynamic texture range, evoking the energy and vivacity of the city. The book includes photographs and notes from the artist's visits made between 1976 and 1998. "I was very keyed up on my first trip to New York in May 1976, and determined to make all the contacts I'd imagined in dark old London. Indeed it was that easy to pick up a phone and to go-see the magazine editors and museum curators, and, with some persuasion, artists such as Andy Warhol in his Broadway office. Each visit there has yielded new discoveries and a rewarding experience of a great city, but more of the people who are so diverse, imaginative, and ready to play their particular part on its stage." - N.P.James, 03/2004Artworks: Allen Street 7 Amsterdam 8 Astoria 9 Audubon Avenue 10 Avenue of the Americas 11 Battery Park 12 Bleeker Street 13 Bowling Green 14 Broad Street 15 Broadway 16 The Bronx 17 Brooklyn Heights 18 Bryant Park 19 Canal Street 20 Cathedral Parkway 21 Central Park 22 Chelsea Pier 23 Chinatown 24 Communipaw 25 Convent Avenue 26 Cooper Square 27 Desbrosses Street 28 Dey Street 29 East 125th Street 30 East River 31 East Village 32 Eastern Parkway 33 Empire State 34 Exchange Place 35 Fifth Avenue 36 Fort Jay 37 Frederick Douglas Boulevard 38 Gateway Plaza 39 Gramercy Park 40 Grand Street 41 Greenwich Village 42 Harlem 43 Hoboken 44 Houston Street 45 Hudson River 46 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir 47 Jersey City 48 Lexington Avenue 49 Liberty Street 50 Little Italy 51 Long Island City 52 Madison Avenue 53 Marcus Garvey Park 54 Marion 55 Monro Street 56 Murray Street 57 North Moore Street 58 Park Avenue 59 Pearl Street 60 Peck Slip 61 Red Hook 62 Soho Grand 63 Spring Street 64 St Nicholas Park 65 Sunnyside 66 Tribeca 67 Trinity 68 Union Sqare 69 Upper New York Bay 70 Vesey Street 71 Vestrey Street 72 Wall Street 73 Washington Square 74 Weehawken 75 West 14th Street 76 West 72nd Street 77 West 9th Street 78 West Bergen 79 West End Avenue 80 Manhattan Notes 81-88 May 1976 George Washington Hotel .
