Paula Ellis grew up in a small town in central Michigan. Her love of the outdoors and travel began at a young age. She is the mother of two children, daughter Heather and son Todd David. Through travel and everyday experiences, she taught them to appreciate, respect and enjoy all of creation. Paula enjoys being a grandma, exploring the wilderness, traveling and watching her four grandchildren grow and learn about the world in which they live. She believes children are eager to learn about their environment, whether they’re playing in the backyard, traveling across the country or catching bugs on a camping trip. To that end, she strives to encourage children of all ages to see and explore all of the fascinating things around them.
Welcome to Wisconsin
Wisconsin is named after the state’s longest river, the Wisconsin River. The river’s name comes from “Meskonsing,” river running through a red place. The name was jumbled from the Algonkian language to the French “Ouisconsin” to the modern American spelling. But one thing is the same: Places along the Wisconsin River still have reddish rocks.
A long time before anyone wrote words, Ice Age glaciers melted once and for all. The first known settlers moved into Wisconsin, the Paleo-Indians. Archaeologists here have found their 12,000-year-old stone tools.
By the time Europeans started visiting Wisconsin, American Indians had been farming in villages for over 1,000 years. The Indian nations who lived in this region during the 1600s were Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwe and Sioux.
Etienne Brule was probably the first visitor here in the 1620s. Then came Jean Nicolet in 1634. Both were Frenchmen. French fur traders arrived next and built a fort near Ashland, Wisconsin, around 1660.
More Europeans came to settle in the land of lakes, forests and prairies. After many struggles between French, British, Native Americans and the United States, Wisconsin became a US territory in 1836 and became the 30th US state a dozen years later on May 29, 1848.
The state of Wisconsin is bordered by four states and two Great Lakes. The Wisconsin River splits the state in two, and then flows into the Mississippi River on Wisconsin’s western border. Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes and many streams and rivers, and many fishermen try to catch “the big one” in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin is best known as the nation’s leader in cheese production and the second-largest milk producer in the country. Wisconsin is also a major producer of paper products and lumber, and the forests that cover half of the state are Wisconsin’s largest natural resource.
