Due to the necessary classification of sensitive CIA publications and operations, the general understanding of the intensive work that intelligence analysts accomplish has been limited. The disciplines and techniques that analysts employ to manage complex national and international crises often goes unseen. The CIA Intelligence Analyst demystifies the profession of intelligence analyst at the CIA and describes how the wide array of analytic specialties–or “disciplines” in the language of the CIA– function in support of the nation’s leaders. This volume distinguishes among analysts and their specialized tradecraft used in disciplines ranging from political, economic, leadership, and military matters to science & technology, cyber, counterterrorism, and counterintelligence. Chapters written by practicing and former CIA intelligence analysts describe how they work in their individual specialties, drive and participate in data collection, and build relationships to support a diverse array of national decision-makers. The book reveals the key intelligence questions that analysts attack, their methods, their products, and their successes and failures. Each of the chapters discusses the ways in which analysts interact with those who collect raw intelligence, and the hands-on roles they often play in collection. Just as important, The CIA Intelligence Analyst details the relationships analysts develop with the diverse set of policymakers who use CIA analysis. The CIA Intelligence Analyst is the only book to display the range of analysis in which the CIA engages and will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars interested in national security and U.S. intelligence as well as early career analysts.
