Synopsis
The Austrian Ingeborg Bachmann is among the most influential postwar writers in German. Her work is enmeshed with the intellectual/cultural developments of the period: her poetry and prose confront what she called "the sickness of our time," the subtle connection between patriarchal society, catastrophic history in the form of National Socialism, and the subjugation of the Other. Interest in her poetry and prose increased sharply in the 1980s with the publication of the first edition of her works, and has been growing ever since. Bachmann's impact on German literature is comparable to that of Virginia Woolf on English literature; accordingly, her critical writings enhance our awareness of not only her own works, but also those of many other writers, philosophers, and artists. About the Authors
INGEBORG BACHMANN was an Austrian poet and author, regarded as one of the major voices of German-language literature in the 20th century.

KARL IVAN SOLIBAKKE is Associate Professor of German and Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for Budget and Long-Range Planning at Syracuse University.
