The Cancer Basics book series was developed to offer fundamentals of cancer and its treatment to recently graduated and experienced nurses looking for professional growth and knowledge in their oncology specialty. This third edition of Cancer Basics addresses the same fundamentals of cancer and its treatment as previous editions. It has added symptom management and survivorship basics using the most state-of-the-science and evidence-based content for a more comprehensive review. Unique from the first two editions, this third edition has been integrated with the Oncology Nursing Society Cancer Basics online course. All content has been updated to provide a more reader- and learner-friendly product that will appeal to a broader audience of oncology and non-oncology professionals.
New chapters have been included on immunotherapy, adoptive cellular therapy, infusion-related adverse events, and caregiver and family education. Each chapter features key points and study questions to aid the learner in identifying essential concepts. These questions and their associated rationale can be used as a study guide for preparation for the oncology certified nurse (OCN) examination.

Julia Eggert, PhD, AGN-BC, AOCN®, FAAN (SC), educated oncology nurses at local and national levels since 1986. She always believed that understanding the intricacies of the biology and genetics of cancer was an essential foundation for all levels of oncology nurses, especially those working at the bedside and chairside with patients diagnosed with cancer. In 1986, Dr. Eggert was part of the first group testing to earn the oncology certified nurse (OCN®) credential. That experience ignited a determination to educate nurses about the benefits of certification and to provide them with basic information needed to provide the highest level of oncology patient care. She published numerous articles and book chapters, reflecting her goal to update the education of oncology nurses on the need to incorporate cancer biology, especially genetics, into patient care.
