Synopsis
Speech science is the study of speech, its production, transmission and perception. The understanding of these aspects of speech requires an understanding of anatomy of the orofacial region, neuroanatomy, physiology and acoustics. Speech production is a complex motor task. It requires the involvement of different orofacial, pharyngeal, laryngeal and respiratory muscles. The processes of respiration, phonation, articulation and central nervous control are integral to speech production. Speech disorders can act as a major hindrance to learning due to persistent communication difficulties. Various strategies such as speech therapy, psychotherapy or placing children in special educational programs can be adopted for the management of speech impairments.
