Synopsis

This practical resource provides a survey on the technologies, protocols and architectures that are widely used in practice to implement networked multimedia services. The first part of the book presents the background and basic concepts behind multimedia networking, and provides an introductory high-level overview of the different services and protocols that will be covered in the book. Each of the subsequent parts of the book is focused on the practical analysis of a specific multimedia service, reviewing the diverse network protocols that are of common use to implement it. In particular, the book focuses on a representative set of networked multimedia services, with proven success and high penetration in the telecommunication market, namely Internet telephony, video-on-demand (VoD) and live IPTV.

About the Author

Iván Vidal received a telecommunication engineering degree and a Ph.D. in telecommunications from the University of Vigo, Spain. He is currently an associate professor in telematics engineering. Ignacio Soto is Visiting Professor at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, in the Department of Telematics Engineering. He received his telecommunication engineering degree from the University of Vigo (Spain), and the Ph.D. in telematics engineering from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Madrid, Spain). Dr. Vidal has published over 40 research papers in conferences and international journals and magazines, including IEEE Communications Magazine. Albert Blanchs received his telecommunications engineering degree and Ph.D. from UPC Barcelona Tech, Spain. He is a professor at University Carlos III of Madrid. He has authored more than 100 conference and journal papers and is the inventor of 5 patents. Jaime Garcia-Reinoso received his telecommunications engineering degree from the University of Vigo, Spain and his Ph.D. in telecommunications from the University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. He is currently an associate professor at University Carlos III of Madrid and he has published over 50 papers in the field of broadband computer networks. Iván Lozano is the Head of Technology IP Access Networks at Telefonica Spain. He received his computer engineering degree from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, his Master´s degree of Sciences computer Networks from University Carlos III and Master in Business Administration (MBA) from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid. Gonzalo Camarillo is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Internet Society (ISOC). He is also the head of Data/IT standardization at Ericsson, where he works at the office of the CTO. He holds an MBA from AEE (Aalto University Executive Education; Finland), a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Aalto University (Finland), and two MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from KTH (Royal Institute of Technology; Sweden) and UPM (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid; Spain).
