Synopsis

A college professor and former college president reveals the political underpinnings of George Orwell as expressed in his novels, with special emphasis on the author’s last two novels, Animal Farm and 1984. The growth of Orwell’s disdain for colonialism, as well as his concern for the quality of life under various political systems, undergirds the analysis. While flaws in Orwell’s analyses are acknowledged, the author believes readers can learn important lessons from the study, lessons that can be applied to the individual’s relationship to the state in our time.

“Orwell does not resolve the problems caused by a decadent civilization, a bourgeois society that worships the money-god. Rather, he shows in the novel that our choice―Gordon’s choice―is between the life and death of our civilization. Somehow, those common people raising their aspidistras will survive, as the proles do in 1984. They will not bring about a revolution, they will not overthrow the money-god, and they will continue to be exploited by the money code. Nevertheless, they remain human, carrying on the tradition of decency and usefulness. This tradition is increasingly difficult to sustain in the modern world. For Orwell, this tradition is not a matter of choice; it is a matter of survival.”
