Synopsis
This is the End offers us a witty and thought-provoking wrap-up of our dizzying world, swirling around an oxygen-sucking black hole named Donald Trump. In this time of macho rulers, selfie narcissists and border wall fanatics, humour is needed more than ever. This cartoon collection is introduced by American Nobel Prize laureate and economist Joseph Stiglitz, a unique observer of the Trump phenomenon. Stiglitz writes in his foreword: 'To many Americans, every day was anguish, and the only salve for our pain was Chappatte s cartoons. They could help us come to terms with what was happening, even, perhaps, help us better understand our anguish. How else do you deal with something as grotesque, ridiculous, and unbelievable, but nonetheless real and consequential?' In June 10, 2019, Chappatte posted an essay titled 'The End of Political Cartoons at The New York Times', breaking a news that was quickly confirmed by the newspaper. Chappatte's essay received worldwide attention, starting a discussion about self-censorship by the media in the age of internet angry mobs, and has inspired a TED talk given by Chappatte in July 2019. The original essay is published as an appendix to this cartoon book.

About the Author
Patrick Chappatte was a cartoonist for The New York Times until the newspaper terminated all editorial cartoons in June 2019. He now works for European media Der Spiegel, Le Canard Enchaîné, NZZ am Sonntag, Le Temps and contributes to Counterpoint.com, a newsletter featuring American cartoonists from the left and the right. Chappatte is a three-time recipient of the Overseas Press Club of America's Best Cartoon Award. He lived in New York and Los Angeles and is now based in Geneva.
