Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon (commonly known as Madame Guyon) was a French mystic and one of the key advocates of Quietism. Quietism was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church, and she was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing a book on the topic, A Short and Easy Method of Prayer. Guyon believed that one should pray all the time, and that in whatever one does, one should be spending time with God.

Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon, commonly known as Madame Guyon, was a French religious writer, mystic, and advocate of interior prayer. Born in 1648, she became one of the best-known figures associated with Quietism, a movement emphasizing inward stillness, surrender to God, and prayer beyond discursive thought. Her writings presented the spiritual life as a journey of self-abandonment, purification, love, and union with God, themes that made her influential among later readers of Christian mysticism and contemplative devotion.Guyon's teachings also made her controversial. Her emphasis on passive prayer and inward surrender brought her into conflict with church authorities, and she spent years under restriction and imprisonment. Yet her works, including A Short Method of Prayer, continued to circulate widely and influenced Christians across denominational lines, including later Protestant devotional readers. Her legacy remains important to those interested in contemplative prayer, Catholic spirituality, Christian mysticism, Quietism, and the literature of spiritual surrender.
