Most career experts report the biggest cause of employee disengagement surrounds employees not feeling valued and appreciated at work. Generally, I agree, but I also believe that theory only scratches the surface of the real issue. The real issue lies beneath it and most people believe they are disengaged for the wrong reasons. This becomes clear when employees decide to take action and move jobs or switch companies and quickly find themselves disengaged, yet again, after the novelty of their new job wears off.

The real reason most of us are disengaged is simply because we want to be accepted for who we are when we are at work and we aren’t. If we cannot be accepted as who we truly are, then we cannot comfortably and constructively disagree with or challenge our boss or co-workers nor seek fulfillment in a valueless position. It’s unwritten but we know we can’t be honest about ourselves so we live in constant fear that our true selves will somehow be uncovered and that ultimately, we’ll pay the price – up to and including the loss of our jobs.
