Bob Montana was born into a showbiz family. His father, Ray, was a banjo player on the Keith vaudeville circuit and his mother, the former Roberta Pandolfini, was a Ziegfeld dancer. As a young boy, the future cartoonist and his sister would sometimes put on their dancing shoes and join their dad in his finale. It wasn't as a hoofer, however, that brought fame to Bob Montana—it was his talent at the drawing board. He drew inspiration from the facts, fantasy, feelings, and fun of his own high school days in Haverhill, Massachusetts to bring to life the Archie characters originally conceived by John L. Goldwater.
Continuing our Eisner Award-winning series collecting the Archie newspaper strip-by far the rarest of all Archie comics collectibles. We jump ahead to 1960, when Bob Montana hits his stride. As the country entered what would become the Swingin' Sixties, Montana entered his 14th year writing and drawing the series. The amazing cast is well established: Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Fred and Mary Andrews (Archie's mom and pop), Reggie, the Lodges… and at school, Principal Weatherbee, Miss Grundy, Mr. Flutesnoot, Miss Shapely, Miss Beazly the cafeteria cook, Svensen 'de Yanitor', and Coach Kleats.
