In the summer of 1996 at Kinder Mann Forest Camp in rural Missouri, the elderly camp director finds his counselors swimming naked two days before the camp is to open and fires them all. Among his new counselors is Wyatt Hurdy, a genetically disfigured young man. All his life, large, gentle, diligent Wyatt has been misjudged because of his appearance. Now, he's among the counselors who will be responsible for 104 severely developmentally disabled adults, all wards of the state. In this world away from the world, the new counselors and disabled campers will begin to reveal themselves, and though most are well-intentioned, Wyatt is called on to prevent a terrible tragedy. But in doing so, he commits an act whose repercussions will alter his life and the lives of other Kinder Mann staff members for life.

""The Inverted Forest" is a magnificent novel, a true literary achievement that left me awestruck and breathless. It moves with a strange, eerie sense of dread, and it's full of suspense, but what impressed me most of all was the depth of John Dalton's insight into his characters. The chorus of narrators that make up this novel are drawn with such wisdom, compassion and kindness, the pages nearly seem to glow. I loved this book." --Dan Chaon, author of "Await Your Reply"
""The Inverted Forest" is a novel of immense insight and humanity by a writer whose prose can be exciting, tender, and unnervingly candid all at once. John Dalton's narrative proceeds with a grand inevitability, its resolution deeply satisfying and powerful. It has to be my Novel of the Year." --Jim Crace, author of "Being Dead" and "All That Follows"
"A layered consideration of what happens when intentions good and bad collide...tearing suspense...intelligent insight." -"Publishers Weekly"
Dalton s expert control of his material is impressive....this is a fully populated, humane yet largely unsentimental narrative of lingering impact.

"Dalton writes you into a deep world thatsucks you up and spits you out hours later, a changed person. You can'tremember reading for hours, but there you are, staring at the book's cover, dazed." --Ploughshares
