New Age healers have been saying for years that mind, body and spirit are closely interconnected, and that physical healing can come through spiritual means. Now two medical practitioners are saying the same thing. Spirit Body Healing is based on nurse Mary Rockwood Lane's PhD research and on the practical work done by Dr Michael Samuels with his cancer patients. The key to healing, they claim, is guided visualisation and creativity.

Each chapter contains personal accounts of people, some with very serious illnesses, having some form of mystical experience. The authors claim that "spiritual experiences change every cell in your body"--your nervous system, hormonal system and immune system--to bring healing. They refer to Jung's remarks that "his patients who believed in God and in an afterlife did better with life-threatening illnesses than did those who were atheists... Whether or not God existed... the belief clearly proved beneficial to people in their healing". They also cite recent scientific studies showing that intensive-care patients who are prayed for (even without their knowledge) do better than those who are not.

Throughout the book are simple and well-explained guided imagery exercises, similar to the mental, emotional or spiritual "journeys" taken by shamans through the ages. "Our participants did all kinds of things that took them deeper into their visions with a creative process". You don't have to be artistically talented, a painter or a poet, to be creative: walking, gardening, even writing joke books can be useful.

Whatever the scientific basis of its claims--and the authors say that their research has been academically peer-reviewed--this book could be a tremendous inspiration to anyone with a serious illness. --David V. Barrett

MICHAEL SAMUELS, M.D., has used guided imagery with cancer patients for over twenty–five years. The author of sixteen previous books, Dr. Samuels has often appeared on television and radio, including the Today show.

MARY ROCKWOOD LANE, R.N., Ph.D., one of the world s experts on healing and art, is the cofounder and codirector of the Arts in Medicine Program at the University of Florida, where the Spirit Body Healing study was conducted.
