Natural common-sense approaches to pest control.
How would you like a guide on nature-friendly pest control for your home and garden made from ingredients found in your own kitchen, like ammonia, baking soda and bran? Did you know that you can control aphids on your rose bushes using banana peels? Sound good but impossible? Well with "Dead Snails Leave No Trails" you will wonder why you ever put up with the smell and possible health hazards of chemical pesticides. Our book is filled with safe and practical tips that I, an entomologist and former zookeeper and my co-author, an organic gardener and garden talk-show host have used for years. In the book we offer chapters dealing with pest control of many common and troublesome creatures like ants, roaches, mice, termites and (of course) snails. We will also help you protect your pets from fleas and ticks. Sometimes people tell us it is hard to tell the good insects and animals from the bad ones, so included are illustrations and common sense explanations to make you a pretty good amateur biologist in no time. You will also learn how to use an insect's own biology against it and what plants act as natural bug repellents. We will also help you keep those four-legged intruders like gophers, deer and skunks from destroying your garden. At the end of the book there is a handy reference and buying guide to beneficial insects and suppliers. In summary if you are looking for a safe, natural alternative to pesticides and harmful chemicals, this book is worth a look. I would love to hear your best natural pest control tips or how you attract butterflies and nature to your garden. Please drop me a line at my e-mail address.
As one of the country's first environmental TV reporters, LOREN NANCARROW has seen interest and knowledge in humans' role in the natural environment grow significantly in the past three decades, and he's been awarded some of broadcast journalism's highest honors for reporting on environmental science and nature around the planet. When not covering the news, Loren has worked at improving the environment as a founding trustee of the EcoLife Foundation. The EcoLife Foundation has projects in the United States, Mexico, and Africa aimed at reducing carbon output, reforesting important habitat, and saving vulnerable species, like monarch butterflies in Mexico and mountain gorillas in Uganda. Loren makes his home in coastal Southern California. He and his wife, Susie, have three grown children. He is a passionate organic vegetable gardener.
A native Californian, JANET HOGAN TAYLOR graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in biology with emphasis in entomology. Janet took a job with the San Diego Zoo, where she became a senior keeper in the bird department. Never forgetting her roots in entomology, Janet helped develop several natural pest control techniques at the zoo to keep the birds and animals pest free. Currently, Janet works as an environmental scientist and resides in Southern California with her husband, a black lab named Drake, and hundreds of backyard birds, reptiles, and assorted varmints. She and her husband Brian, also an entomologist, have two grown children. Loren and Janet have written three books together: Dead Snails Leave No Trails, Dead Daisies Make Me Crazy, and The Worm Book."About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
