Devil's Shelter was written in 1937 by the enigmatic R.R. Ryan. Until recently it wasn't known if the mysterious author was a man or a woman. This novel seems to be a precursor of Ryan's masterpiece, Freak Museum, and poses the classic situation where an innocent young woman finds herself trapped in an insane asylum by a rainstorm. It can happen to anyone, but it usually happens to young innocents. Maybe she's not so innocent?

Who was R.R. Ryan? The author wrote like a woman at times and at other times skirted the edge of sadistic pornography. John Pelan devoted a lot of time to tracking down R.R. Ryan and his introductions to the four novels by Ryan that Ramble House publishes tell the whole saga.
