About the Author

Brother Lawrence, born Nicolas Herman around 1614, was a French soldier who later entered a Carmelite monastery in Paris as a lay brother. Assigned largely to kitchen work and other humble duties, he developed a spiritual practice centered on maintaining a continual awareness of God's presence during every activity.His conversations, letters, and spiritual teachings were collected after his death and published as The Practice of the Presence of God. Valued for their simplicity, warmth, and practical wisdom, his writings have become classics of Christian devotional literature and continue to guide readers seeking a deeper life of prayer.
