About this title

About the Author

James Allen was a British philosophical and inspirational writer whose books and essays helped shape the early literature of self-mastery, personal responsibility, and spiritual reflection. Born in Leicester, England, in 1864, Allen worked in relative obscurity and lived quietly for much of his adult life, but his writings found a durable audience because of their directness, seriousness, and compact moral force. He wrote on thought, habit, character, serenity, discipline, and the relationship between the inward life and outward circumstance.Allen is best remembered for As a Man Thinketh, a short work whose influence has far exceeded its length. Its central argument-that character and circumstance are deeply affected by habitual thought-anticipated many later themes in personal development, positive thinking, and inspirational self-help, while retaining the tone of a philosophical and moral essay rather than a modern motivational manual. His work remains important to readers interested in classic self-help, ethical reflection, spiritual discipline, New Thought influence, and the long tradition of practical writing on the formation of character.
