An exegete claimed that a day as defined by the Torah extends from dawn to dawn, and that for thousands of years Jews who had though it extended from dusk to dusk were getting in wrong. Ibn Ezra (1092-1167), Abraham the Spaniard then living in Norman England, was outraged, and sat down at once to correct the nonsense. His lengthy letter expanded into a treatise on the Torah's definition of a year, and month, and a day. He usually begins his argument with the relevant astronomical background, then brings in Scriptural and Talmudic sources, and sometimes tangential material, often to explain a passage in Scripture. Goodman (emeritus mathematics, Dominican U., River Forest, Illinois) presents a Hebrew text and an English translation, both based on the two published and several manuscript Hebrew versions of the text.
