“Tell me your goal and I will tell you WHY you are likely NOT to achieve it! The way in which you have pursued goals in the past has very likely created the exact opposite blueprint of the one needed to achieve what you want. Those negative blueprints may be exactly what are keeping you from living your dreams.” --Tom Terwilliger, 7 RULES of Achievement

Who's A The Helm?
"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your dreams."
— Og Mandino, author, The Greatest Salesman in the World
There is a very old story of a man who had a dream of one day skippering his own ship and sailing her around the world. At long last, he put his dream into action by spending every last penny he has buying a sailing vessel and manning it with an experienced crew.
As the ship is leaving port, he is amazed at the amount of work needed to get the massive craft underway and to maneuver her safely out of the port. His ignorance of the workings of such a vessel compels him to simply leave it all to the crew as he sits back and watches it happen. Later on, after they have safely made it out into open water and the hustle of the crew has settled down, he has a chance to learn more about the workings of the crew and ship and even provide some input. As he does, he comes across a man mopping the salt water off the deck. He says to the crewman, "Never you mind that job. We're at open sea. Relax and enjoy the fresh air." He then observes a man at a large wheel, turning it slightly in one direction and then the other. He asks one of the other crewmen, "Who is that man and what is he doing?"
"Why he is the helmsman, sir, and he is steering the ship."
"Steering the ship?" he exclaims to the crewman. "We're in open waters. There's no need to steer the ship right now. When we see land or another ship, then he can go back to steering. Tell him to relax and enjoy the fresh air." As the story goes, only a few survived the wreck that ensued.
Why do we need to set goals in the first place? Shouldn't it be enough to trust our innate ambition and desire to grow and learn in navigating us toward a better life, a more successful career or the relationship we desire? After all, those desires and dreams are goals in and of themselves, aren't they?
Goals are a direct reflection of what we want in life — our desired outcome for any given situation. Can you imagine, for example, walking into a bank, waiting in line, getting in front of the teller and then not knowing your purpose for being there? Was your objective to make a deposit or a withdrawal, to inquire about a loan, or to ask the teller out for coffee? We don't generally think of our daily tasks as such, but even the simplest things we do during the day are based on some form of intended outcome or purpose. We get into our car in the morning and go to work. Why?
Why do we get out of bed, change our clothes, battle traffic, and drive to work five or more days every week? The answer is simple. We have a "goal" to pay the mortgage or rent every month, to purchase groceries, to buy a new pair of shoes, to take someone special out this weekend, or any number of other things or activities that our paycheck helps us achieve.
You may not identify those things as goals in the traditional sense, but according to the definition, they are goals nonetheless.
Goal[gole] noun - The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed.
* Why are you reading this book?
* Do you have a goal, objective, or intention for reading it?
* What do you hope to get out of it?
* What is your desired outcome?
Once you have identified a specific intention or desired outcome for a specific action — in this case, reading this book — you have taken a huge step toward making that intention a reality.
So have you thought about it? If not, now might be a good time. Since this program is all about creating achievable outcomes and then achieving them, let's begin the process right now.
Before you go any further, I would like you to take exactly one minute and clearly identify three specific things that you would like to get from this program. Then, write them on a clean piece of paper or, better still, in a notebook that you can use for all of the notes and exercises in this book. Think of it as your 7 RULES success journal.
So what are three things you would like to get from reading — or rather participating in — this book? What is something you would like to learn? Something you would like to be able to do, or perhaps something you would like to teach or share with others as a result of this program? Take a moment to identify your three desired outcomes. Do that right now.
Not all goals and desires are driven by the same thing. Some are driven by our conscious desires, wants, or needs. They go beyond our survival needs for food, shelter, a sense of security and, I dare say, sex. Our conscious desires are the things we want, the things that add joy, pride, or fun to our lives. They are the things that better us or keep us from getting any worse off.
We are always either moving toward something we desire or moving away from something we don't want in our life. Quite often, which direction we are moving is only a matter of perspective or how we frame it.
The goal of finding a new job or pursuing a new career, for example, could be based on one of two perspectives:
1. You can be moving toward a new job with better pay and more benefits.
2. Or you can be moving away from a crappy, dead-end job with little pay and no bennies.
Sometimes we do both. We can simultaneously be moving toward something we want or desire and, at the same time, be moving away from something we fear or dislike. Too often, however, we're not moving at all.
Can we know what we want without it being a goal? You know the answer to that as well as I do — yes, they're called dreams. We all have dreams, or vague ideas, about what we want in life. We want to become rich and famous, to be loved, to be powerful, to be safe. We may dream about looking and feeling great or having the energy to do whatever we want. Those dreams could be said to be part of our "I wish ..." or "wouldn't it be nice if ..." list.
Goals, on the other hand, are based on a more specific criteria or outcome and are, therefore, far more powerful and more likely to come to fruition.
The Impact Of Goal Setting
Goal setting is a powerful tool for changing the quality of your life. Goal setting has proven to be absolutely invaluable in the areas of sports, academics, health, personal life, and business. Goal setting identifies to both your conscious and your unconscious mind what it is you intend to achieve.
"If A is a success in life, then A equals X plus Y plus Z.
Work is X; Y is play;and Z is keeping your mouth shut."
— Albert Einstein, observer, Jan. 15, 1950
Goal setting is a fundamental component in the 7 RULES of Achievement formula.
In his book, Success Is Not An Accident, author Tommy Newberry refers to a study of Harvard University business school graduates surveyed in 1979: Researchers found that 84 percent of the class had no goals other than to "enjoy themselves"; 13 percent had goals and plans but had not written them down; and the remaining 3 percent had written goals with a written plan of action. Ten years later, the researchers re-surveyed the class. The 13 percent of graduates with goals in their heads were earning two times as much as the 84 percent without any acknowledged goals. The 3 percent who had written goals and action plans were earning 10 times as much as the other 97 percent combined. Statistics like those certainly create compelling evidence for setting written goals.
Is that to say that every goal we set for ourselves will come to fruition? No! But there is a far greater chance of our dreams coming true if we also set them down as recognized goals.
The real difference between the goals that do become reality and those that evaporate into the mist, like most dreams, has to do with two primary tenets: Passion and Planning. Either of these can override the other to create success, but the two together are practically unstoppable.
Passion
Anything you want so bad that it goes beyond the 'could', 'would', or 'should' and becomes a 'MUST' can create enough passion and impetus that you can almost will it to happen. Have you ever wanted something or needed something so badly that you simply could not live without it? You thought about it constantly. You focused on it, and you moved in the direction of its attainment until it simply happened or until you made it happen? Can you think of a specific time when that was true? What is something that is a part of your life today that, had you not moved toward it with burning passion and desire, would simply have passed you by?
Perhaps you're saying to yourself, "Well, I don't have that kind of passion and never really have." I have a piece of news for you – you do have that kind of passion. We all do. You simply have not yet found it. Passion can be found, or even created, by making your outcome, goal, or even your life's purpose not only about you, but also about others. We'll dig much deeper into finding your passion later on.
Planning
The second thing is strategic planning, or what I call the 7 RULES of Achievement. There is an old saying, "He who fails to plan, plans to fail." Unless you have the undying and burning passion needed to single-handedly move mountains, you had better create a strategy or plan for achieving your life's dreams — or start considering them only dreams and nothing more. The 7 RULES process you're about to learn goes well beyond simple planning and will help you harness the driving passion you need to guarantee success.
One of the great dreamers and planners of our time, Walt Disney, once said, "All dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them."
Combine passion and strategic planning in hot pursuit of your dreams — and just like good old Walt, you can make magic happen.
The 7 Rules
I believe that there are 7 RULES to follow in the strategic achievement of a goal:
1. Get crystal clear on exactly WHAT it is you want.
2. Get equally clear on precisely WHY you want it.
3. Create a clear picture of WHERE you are now (your starting point).
4. Identify what RESOURCES you have and what resources you need.
5. Create a clear yardstick or evidence procedure for MEASURING PROGRESS.
6. Create a vivid INTERNAL REPRESENTATION of the desired outcome.
7. Take massive ACTION.
You might be thinking - that sounds like a lot of stuff just for the attainment of one goal? But what if that goal could change or even save your life? What if it represented the loss of 30, 60, or even 100 pounds, a massive drop in blood pressure or cholesterol, or the ability to stop smoking forever? Or what if it represented the ability to increase your income by 20, 30, or even 50 percent this year? What if it meant the ability to have everything you ever wanted? Would it be worth the time and effort? What if it meant holding onto the safety and security of your current job, marriage or relationship. Would it be worth it? What if those seven steps meant ending your disappointment and frustration forever? What if it meant creating and living the life of your dreams in complete financial abundance?
You tell me. My guess is that it would be well worth it — and more. And, in actuality, once you learn the process, you will be able to apply it with ease to anything and everything you want to manifest in your life, provided you let nothing hold you back from taking the steps.
I will tell you in advance that simply putting this strategy into play without a total commitment to do whatever it takes to accomplish your objective will do little to bring it into your life.
There are several universal laws of success, including the "Law of Attraction" which states, "What we focus on expands." In other words, what you think about most is what you will attract into your life. Now, although I am a big believer in the law of attraction and its power to help manifest what we want in our lives, I have never had an armored truck pull up at my front door and drop off a bag full of money simply because I focused my thoughts on money.
The energy you put into making your goal a reality will directly influence the outcome. If you are prepared to accomplish greatness or simply take your life to the next level, you must first be prepared to work for it and to accept nothing less than 100 percent from yourself. By committing yourself to this program, you will begin building the emotional muscle needed to accomplish anything you want in life.
On the other side of that coin, perhaps you've had the experience of working your tail off toward the attainment of an objective and falling short of making it happen. Commitment alone can go a long way, but often it is not enough to make real magic happen. Remember, it takes both passion and planning to lead you to your desired outcome ... or it to you. If you want guaranteed success, you must apply both, and that is exactly what we will create with this program.
Is This Book Really For Me?
This program is for anyone who has ever struggled to make ends meet, to put food on the table, to find a soul mate, or to find it in the budget to take an actual vacation. This book is for those who are tired of not living up to their potential and who want to create massive abundance in their lives.
This book and the goal achievement process it contains are for you if you want more in your life — a lot more. It was designed to help you identify exactly what you want and why you want it, and to give you the tools needed to map out exactly how you will achieve it.
It is written in a way that will allow you to apply the 7 RULES in your own life to create the massive momentum that will move you with lightning-like speed to your desired outcome. Learning and applying the 7 RULES will also give you the ability to coach, lead, and help others — including friends, family, clients, and students — achieve what they want in their lives as well. Based on my own experience, I can say with absolute confidence that there is no greater or more rewarding goal, objective, or calling than to help and serve others and contribute to their success in some way. As the saying goes, "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish, and you feed him for life." This book is about learning how to fish and about teaching others to fish.
It is my desired outcome that you not just learn the information in this program but that your ability to achieve what you want in your life is transformed by it at the cellular level. For that reason I have included several empowering exercises and declarations designed to help you do exactly that.
What is an empowering declaration, and what does it have to do with achieving what you want in life? An affirmation is something you set out to accomplish, live up to, give thanks for, or believe in. A declaration, on the other hand, is an affirmation that you boldly state out loud with passion, intensity, and conviction.
Let's give them both a try, and see if you can feel the difference; First, state out loud or in your own mind the affirmation, "I am a leader." Now imagine if you were making that same statement to a room full of people who you want to follow you into battle. You might state it aloud with intensity and conviction — "I AM A LEADER." Can you recognize, hear, and feel the difference? The first has very little impact or power in creating any shift in belief of behavior. The latter, however, has power in proportion to the level of conviction with which you say it.
A boldly stated declaration has the ability to raise your energy and emotionally affect your belief system on a cellular level. Stating it out loud and with emotion internalizes the statement and begins to convert it into a belief. How do you think you would behave if, for example, you truly believed that you were a great leader? I mean with every cell of your body?
Adding a physical component to your declaration can give it even more impact and power. Standing up and firmly pounding on or even just placing your fist on your chest while emotionally stating your success declarations out loud creates a physiological trigger, or what we call an anchor, that when repeated anywhere, anytime, instantly stimulates the same feelings of emotion and strength.
Even if you don't fully understand how it works, you can trust that it does work. For it to have the impact you and I would like, you must commit 100 percent and play full out. I know this may seem a little silly at first, but wouldn't you rather be a little silly and really successful than pretending to be cool and living life at a fraction of your potential? If your answer was yes — and I assume it was or you wouldn't still be reading — then start right now by declaring out loud the following two statements:
* "I am committed to giving 100 percent to myself and to this program for the next 30 to 60 days!"
* "I will find and use within these pages the rules, tools, and clues needed to create massive success in my life!"
