a cute book to inspire you on a daily basis! I know some people would find a craft a day a little daunting (how do I keep up?!), but this book has a clever idea you get a craft DESIGN per week, which then is adapted on a daily basis e.g. you may get a cute bear softie design and you can use the same bear one day to make a card, the next to make a Christmas tree ornament and the next as a cupcake decorate. Making it all rather do-able! Alternatively, you could take one week and use it for your party planning e.g. the rainbow week again, with great cards (party invites), straw decoration (at the party) or cupcake topper. As all of it is in clean simple design, it will appeal to both you and the kids some crafts focussing on children, others on adults (love the Moustache ideas! Or e.g. there are also little pin cushion ideas). A lovely book. I think this also would make for a great gift! --Lifeatthezoo, August, 2012

Looking back on my childhood the most useful skill I acquired was that of making things. I was the daughter of a man who made a greenhouse out of a derelict bus, so it was inevitable that something would rub off on me. Well over half a century later it still stands me in good stead: I can see how to make things, how to solve problems and my imagination was fired up at an early stage. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a bus-to-greenhouse converter in-house, but the best start is being encouraged to make things regularly and learning that you don't always have to buy everything you need. A drum roll, please for Sarah Goldschadt's Craft-A-Day. The projects are simple, with something there for even the most ham-fisted of children to excel at. They're linked to the seasons and time of year, so you get snowflakes in winter and strawberries in summer. There's no overt connections to religious festivals, although there are bunnies and eggs around Easter and stockings in late December. It's a wise move - no child is going to feel alienated by a religious festival with which they don't connect. Some of the projects are repetitive - cupcake toppers appear regularly. The designs change, but the principle is the same. It does, however, ensure the child a regular supply of cupcakes... Cards appear regularly, as do gift tags and ornaments, but the fun is in the making, in acquiring the skills rather than in producing a range of goods. The book will appeal more to girls, although there is absolutely no reason why boys shouldn't wear hair ornaments, you know! Instructions are clear and simple. Where they go beyond the basic, as in making a pattern, transferring a pattern onto felt or printing on fabric with a stencil there are more detailed instructions at the back of the book. Templates are supplied to ensure a better finish and it will be possible to use these in other projects. The book is beautifully presented and - miracle of miracles - actually stays open at the page you're using without needing two pairs of hands. Adult supervision will be needed for some projects - at least to begin with - but I spotted nothing which I would regard as a dangerous activity. packed with (365!) simple whimsical makes that require very little in the way of materials, time or specific skills, in fact many of the projects are suitable for making with even young children. This is a big hardcover book with lots of lovely photographs and clear instructions. The projects are organised into themed weeks (eg Snowflake Week, Pumpkin Week, People Week) and each week you'll find a number of different projects using the same templates, all based on the theme. this book is a godsend, it just provides that tiny bit of inspiration you need to keep the kids productively occupied for a little while. What I like about the crafts here is that they are so simple, as long as you have cut out your template you a 2 year old can do many of them- literally. Sarah (pronounced SAH-RAH) Goldschadt is a Danish-American freelance graphic designer and crafter who loves to make things, travel, and take pictures. She was bornand spent all her childhood summers in Copenhagen, Denmark; grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. During her 10-year career in magazines, she's worked for Food Network Magazine, Do It Yourself, Kids' Rooms, and has freelanced for Oprah, Better Homes and Gardens, and Martha Stewart Living.
