R. N. Morris was born in Manchester in 1960 and now lives in North London with his wife and two children. He sold his first short story to a teenage girls’ magazine while still a student at Cambridge University, where he read classics. Making his living as a freelance copywriter, he has continued to write, and occasionally publish, fiction. One of his stories, “The Devil’s Drum,” was turned into a one-act opera, which was performed at the Purcell Room in London’s South Bank. Another, “Revenants,” was published as a comic book.

Historical crime novel featuring Porfiry Petrovich, the investigating magistrate created by Dostoevsky for Crime and Punishment, in a new murder investigation set in 1868 St. Petersburg. Morris extends Dostoevsky's character into a psychologically focused detective story shaped by revenge, guilt, suffering, and questions of justice. The Imperial Russian setting incorporates urban poverty, social inequality, disease, and the oppressive atmosphere of nineteenth-century St. Petersburg. The novel was shortlisted for the 2008 Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger and received further recognition from the CWA Ellis Peters Historical Dagger, making it of particular interest to readers of Russian historical fiction, literary mysteries, and psychologically driven historical detective fiction.
