Clad in its leonine garb, the Pekingese pays homage to the lion whose appearance it resembles. This quaint Chinese toy dog possesses a characteristic large head, adorned by a profuse mane and a long straight coat over its small well-balanced body. Revered for its fearless and loyal disposition, the Pekingese was the jealously guarded possession of the Royal Palace, and today has countless admirers throughout the world. This is a companion dog who radiates with dignity and quality, a fabulous choice for a dedicated, attentive dog lover. This book provides the much-needed factual information about the Pekingese and its ancestry, character and standard, as well as the proper selection, feeding, training, preventative health care and showing. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup’s arrival and preventing puppy problems. In addition to an extremely authoritative text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Pekingese. Whether it’s basic training problems, allergies or fleas, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Pekingese. Topics discussed include: History of the Pekingese; Characteristics of the Pekingese; The Pekingese Breed Standard; Your Pekingese puppy; Everyday care of your Pekingese; Housebreaking and training your Pekingese; Health care of your Pekingese; Showing your Pekingese.
The Pekingese boasts an enormously rich history and is deservedly a breed that enjoys great popularity throughout the world. Bred meticulously by sovereigns of Imperial China for centuries, the Pekingese was a special favourite in the royal palaces where he was kept separately from the other castle dogs. Those kept in the palaces were of finer quality than the Pekingese kept by the commoners, the latter being somewhat larger and coarser in general appearance. Dogs of the royal households were occasionally presented to other Eastern monarchs and doubtless some of their bloodlines filtered through to other breeds of the East. The Japanese Chin, Pug, Tibetan Spaniel and the charming Happa Dog, meaning 'under-the-table-dog', who looked rather like a short-coated Peke, are some obvious examples. Although breeds such as these are still distantly related, their relationship in the Middle Ages was much closer than it is today.
