Synopsis

Records of Civic Resistance During the Cultural Revolution is a chronologically organized collection of historical materials documenting grassroots acts of resistance. The sources include local gazetteers, court indictments, judicial verdicts, newspaper reports, and other original written records-diverse in type and broad in origin. By arranging these scattered documents along a timeline, the book reconnects fragments preserved across different institutions and media, revealing the continuity and historical trajectory of civic resistance during the Cultural Revolution.

Unlike region-based compilations derived primarily from local gazetteers, this work is a "chronicle of texts." It shows that resistance in that repressive era was never a series of isolated incidents, but a persistent undercurrent running through the decade. Every document and every record stands as evidence of how ordinary people confronted violence and absurdity.
