9781592575145: Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry

Synopsis

With topics such as stoichiometry, chemical equilibria, and thermodynamics, it’s no wonder so many students have a bad reaction to chemistry class!

Fortunately, The Complete Idiot’s Guide® to Chemistry, Second Edition gives readers an easy-to-understand formula for success when it comes to passing their chemistry class with flying colors. Intended for both high school students who are required to take a college prep chemistry course, and college students who need to take chemistry to meet their degree requirements, this book gives readers a non-intimidating, easy-to-understand companion to their textbooks. The book follows a standard math-based chemistry curriculum, covering the following topics:

v Atomic structure and elements

v The periodic table

v Ionic and covalent compounds

v Chemical reactions

v Kinetics

v Acids and bases

v Electrochemistry

v Organic chemistry

v Nuclear chemistry

v Stoichiometry

v Thermodynamics

In addition, this new addition includes coverage of biochemistry and twice the number of solved practice problems contained in the previous edition.

About the Author

Ian Guch has taught chemistry in all forms, and at all levels in both the high school and college settings. While working on his Masters degree, he taught general level chemistry and organic chemistry at Colorado State University, winning Teaching Assistant of the Year honors in 1995. He later taught remedial chemistry, general chemistry, and International Baccalaureate chemistry at Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, where started he started a website (chemfiesta.com) that offers free resources for both students and other chemistry teachers. Ian currently teaches general and honors chemistry at the Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, MD. In the past few years, he has written a chemistry lab book, and a book of quizzes titled The Complete Book of Chemistry Quizzes and Practice Problems. As a former student who himself did very poorly in high school chemistry, Guch knows how it feels to struggle with chemistry, as well as a good understanding of how to get the material across to poorly-motivated students.
