Editor's Choice: No matter how experienced a sticher you are, a good reference guide is indispensible. And, of course, if you're a beginner it's a definate must-buy! Whether you want to build a knowledge base straight away by reading it cover-to-cover, or just need to dip into it now and then to check exactly how to attache a press stud for example, a solid reference is always a reassuring presence on your bookcase. Sewing Essentials is a great first reference book. it's not to bulky or expensive yet still managaes to cover all the basics. Five ytpes of top stiched seams? Check. Darts, why you need them and how to do them? Check. Interpreting the code on pattern packs? Check. Don't let the technical talk put you off, thoguh - everything is clearly explained so even a complete beginner can be confident in their new knowledge and develope new skills. Clearly laid-out sections mean that it is easy to get straight to where you need to be, so you don't need to read throguh five paragraphs on stretch seams if all you really need to do is set a buttonhole, There are claer, well-lit photographs to illustrate every point and help you picture your work before ever having to lift a needle. Being written by Singer, it's naturally geared towards machine stiching, and there's a thorough look at every component of your sewing machine. There are still hand-sewing instructions where needed thoufgh, and the absics of cutting and setting up your fabric are the same no matter how you're stiching. --The Essential Guide to Sewing, November, 2009
The best sewing book I have come across. I learned how to properly sew on a button and use my machine's one-step buttonhole maker. It took away my fear of screwing up and guaranteed perfect buttons and buttonholes. LOVE IT!--Pattie Cordove--This is a great book, especially for beginners. Starts you at the basics and builds up to simple easy to sew projects. I would recommend this for anyone who is a beginner or wants a better understanding of the basics of sewing. Included are how to read pattern pieces, explanation of basic tools, how to handle fabrics. Great chapter on stitching techniques- with pictures and seam finishes and so much more.--I am a professional tailor and used to teach sewing. When people express an interest in learning the craft I ALWAYS recommend this book. It covers what you want to learn and the illustrations are easy to follow. I really like the section on tension problems because I think this is what discourages most beginners and is so easy to fix if you follow the illustrations. I am going to Africa this summer to teach tailoring to a community of women there and hope to be bringing many copies of this book because the illustrations are easy to follow even if you can't read the text. Thanks singer!--I first purchased this book as a requirement for a college class in 1994 and still reference back to it when I need to brush up on a certain skill. The fact that a major college uses this to teach its fashion design and merchandising students how to sew says a lot. I highly recommend to everyone from the beginner to experienced seamstress--While not for the complete beginner, this book explains all the tools, tips and methods from basic to complex. Great for the amateur or hobby sewer who may not have learned the finer points of finishing seams, advanced sewing techniques and all the possibilities available with various machine attachments and special tools. If you want to take your sewing skills to the next level, this book is a great place to start. Highly recommended and packs a lot of information for the price. Also a great reference book --seworld dot com, November 2009
I received this book as part of a sewing and dressmaking correspondence course I am taking. I already had some previous sewing experience but this book has some wonderful suggestions on how to make one's items look more polished and professional. I am a very visual learner and this book contains beautiful close up color photography of all techniques discussed. I particularly enjoyed the section on seam finishes-there were several different ways to finish the seams nicely without serging! The photography is just a joy to look at-I have had this book for a few months and I refer to it often. It has a place of honor in my home sewing library. I look forward to checking out other books from the Singer Sewing Reference library! --pattern review dot com, Oct, 2009
