Synopsis

Interest in virtue-based ethics, both on the theoretical level and in particular domains such as health care, has grown steadily in recent decades. Whereas most versions of virtue ethics focus on moral virtues such as beneficence, caring, and justice, Devettere follows in the footsteps of Aristotle and focuses on the intellectual virtue of prudence, the virtue of ethical decision making. His third edition of a classic text in health care ethics includes numerous landmark cases that have arisen since the last edition, such as the story of Terri Schiavo, Jesse Gelsinger (the first death caused by genetic research), and examples of controversial HIV/AIDS research in Africa. New topics for this edition include partial birth abortion law (upheld in Gonzales v. Carhart, 2007), embryonic stem cell research, infant euthanasia in The Netherlands, recent Vatican instructions on feeding tubes, organ donation after cardiac death, new developments in artificial hearts, clinical trials developed by pharmaceutical companies to market new drugs, and ghostwritten scientific articles published in major medical journals. One new chapter has been added, treating the ethical aspects of several social and political issues in American health care. In addition, the bibliographic essays at the end of each chapter have been thoroughly updated, offering students additional resources for further reading. The book includes a helpful glossary of terms in health care and moral philosophy, as well as an index of cases.
