Synopsis
One of a series which offers a hands-on approach to learning, exploring science through experiments, projects and activities, this title looks at the world of insects explaining how they are divided into groups of species, and what makes them different from other animals - their body parts, how they fly, see, and eat, how they protect themselves from their enemies, their lifecycles and their social behaviour. Readers are encouraged to become entomologists, or insect-watchers, themselves, and there are many practical suggestions for insect-spotting activities - such as the construction of pitfall traps to catch insects and instructions for making a pooter to remove insects from plants for observation in containers. Numerous projects are recommended to explain insect sight, the use of their antennae, how they jump, fly, feed, defend themselves, metamorphosize and see at night. To add interest to the topic of the beehive there are project instructions, a game and suggested movements for a "waggle" dance. The text also describes how to construct an ant colony as a method of observing the way ants live and suggestions for creating a wasp's nest as an example of insect architecture.
